Loango National Park

Loangois the jewel of Gabon's west coast. Highlights for the visitor include breathtaking panoramas with elephant, buffalo, hippo, gorilla and leopard venturing on the white beachfront, a unique sight in the world. Loango is internationally renowned as a site for tarpon of record size, as well as many other large sport ocean fish. The Loango is an exceptional coastal park because of the diversity of its ecosystems. Located on the coast some 250 km to the south of Libreville, the Loango encompasses over 100 km of wild uninhabited coastline. In this magical place, elephants, hippopotamus, Red Forest Buffalo, Sitatunga, and sometimes gorilla wander on the white sandy beaches or concentrate in the adjacent marshlands. Birding in this area supports a range of species unlikely to be found elsewhere in Africa. Here we will have opportunities to seeBlack & Plumed Guineafowl, Black-headed Bee-eater, Gabon Helmet-shrike, Rufous-tailed Palm-thrush, Long-tailed Hawk, Nkulengu Rail, Red-billed Dwarf Hornbill, White-throated Blue Swallow, White-browed Forest Flycatcher, Blue Cuckoo-shrike, and Pel's Fishing Owl. On the mammal front we will have the opportunity to see Forest Elephant and Buffalo, Crowned Monkey, Putty-nosed Monkey, Chimpanzee and perhaps Manatees. Three species of crocodile, Nile, Slender-nosed and Dwarf, inhabit the waters in this area.
