Seychelles: Private Island - North Island *****+

North Island is most northerly of the inner granitic islands of the Seychelles archipelago. It is located approximately 32 km north west of the main island, Mahe and five km north of its nearest neighbour Silhouette. The island is about 2.5 km long by 1 km wide - an area of around 210 hectares. There are three main beaches on the island - at any time one of these beaches will be sheltered from the prevailing winds.

On North Island, the building of the lodge is part of a long-term process of rehabilitating the island, which has been degraded by over a hundred years of agricultural activity. Existing buildings or materials from them will be used where possible and structures such as stonewalls once used to pen cattle and pigs, will be recycled. Alien trees like Casuarinas and coconut palms will be felled and their wood used in construction and for making furniture

Once you arrive on the island your first impressions will be of the simplicity and tranquillity of the setting and of how the buildings seem to emerge naturally and comfortably from the beach, the rocks and the trees. From the comfort of the beach lounge, you will be given a brief orientation of the island and its activities and your impressions will be of natural materials, wooden decks, palm roofs, stone walls, still ponds, tropical vegetation, sculpture gardens, inviting rooms in warm natural colours. The walk, or ride in battery-operated golf carts, to the villas will take you past some of the original buildings on the island, which have been beautifully restored. You will wind your way along sandy paths through the canopy of indigenous trees and palms catching tantalizing glimpses of the other nine villas and of the sea and beach. There are only ten villas on North Island and the limited number of guests in residence at any one time will give you sense of ownership and ease in your surroundings. The objective is to make you feel like you are staying on a private island, which you are sharing with a select group of like-minded individuals. The sense of belonging is reinforced by the importance of the rehabilitation process and the way in which guests who are interested are encouraged to participate in and learn about the process of restoration of the island. Such encounters stimulate learning and an awareness of the importance of sustainability and frequently lead to a new awareness of and commitment to environmental issues. Prices Include full board meal option plus teas, coffees, mineral water and soft drinks, sea kayaking around North Island, all snorkelling in and around North Island and Silhouette dive sites, use of gymnasium, fly fishing around North Island, Hobie sailing around North island, the use of one 'Island Buggy' per villa for the duration of your stay and the use of mountain bikes.

Each North Island guest is offered a complimentary 20 minute soothing seated massage on arrival to ease them into their North Island experience.

Carried out by an enthusiastic and talented team, the In-Villa treatments allow you to relax in your own space and soak up the beauty of your surroundings. There's nothing quite like lifting your head off the massage table to take a glimpse at the palms, pristine beach and translucent blue sea.

The North Island spa will be opening during the course of 2004, the exact date is still to be confirmed. In the meanwhile, please rest assured that guests can enjoy superb spa treatments in the privacy of their own luxury Villa.

Itinerary: 7 nights

DAY 1: Fly from Johannesburg to Mahe, Seychelles biggest island. At the airport our agents will meet you and transfer you to the Wharf Marina Hotel, where you will be staying for one night. (B&B)
DAY 2: Transfer to the airport and check in for your flight to North Island where you will be staying for 5 nights on a fully inclusive basis.
DAY 7: Flight back to Mahe and transfer to the Wharf Marina Hotel (B&B)
DAY 8: Transfer to the airport and flight back to Johannesburg
