Madagascar: Baobab Cafe ***
This boutique-hotel is situated in the port of Morondava, about 400 km from the capital, Antananarivo, though most tourists arrive by air. It lies on a long, sandy spit of land called Nosy Kely, which runs southward from the town centre, flanked by the Indian Ocean to the west and a mangrove-lined tidal river to the east. Reached from the main road through Nosy Kely, the hotel has an unremarkable whitewashed exterior, and the small reception area is also strictly functional. The bar and dining area, by contrast, is attractive, spread across a stilted wooden platform overlooking the mangrove-lined river, and leading toward a large pool deck surrounded by shaded tables. The restaurant is widely regarded to be among the best in Madagascar, majoring in locally caught seafood, though the meat and poultry dishes are also superb.
The standard rooms are comfortably furnished, with twin or double beds, tiled floors, satellite TVs, mini bars, air-conditioning and en-suite hot showers. The older rooms in the main building tend to be a little cramped and stuffy, whereas those in the annex are more spacious and airy, with wooden floors, cane ceilings, and private balconies facing the river and leading out to the pool.
