IT06-E-Madagascar Nosy Iranja ****
Located 45 kilometres south of Nosy Be Island is the magnificent Nosy Iranja, one and a half hours by speedboat from Nosy Be. Nosy Iranja Be and Nosy Iranja are two tropical islands connected to each other by a white sandbank and only visible at low tide. The larger island Iranja Be is the final resting place of a princess whom the island is named after and is considered a sacred place. This larger island also has a lighthouse designed by Gustav Eiffel and a small village inhabited by the local fishermen.
The smaller island Nosy Iranja offers authentic, luxury suites scattered around the island and all boasting unbelievable sea views. Nestled in 13-hectares of wild tropical gardens, the hotel offers thirty spacious suites. Twenty Deluxe Suites with one bedroom and one bathroom and ten Deluxe Family Suites with two bedrooms and one bathroom.
All the suites have king size beds, en-suite bathrooms (showers only) with dressing rooms, wall safes, ceiling fans, tea/coffee facilities and a well stocked mini bar. The bathrooms have two wash-basins, a separate toilet, a magnifying mirror and a hair-dryer.
There are two beaches suitable for swimming, the south beach is more private and as a result there are no loungers, umbrellas or beach service. This is the beach where the turtles hatch. If you want to be closer to the action then use the sandbank beach where there are waiters ready to serve you as well as umbrellas and loungers. This beach is close to all the activities.
The restaurant offers traditional sea food as well as international cuisine, Malagasy specialities and light lunches. Both breakfast and lunch are usually buffet style and evening meals are normally a la carte (the chef will offer three choice for your three course dinner menu).
Watch the sunset in the comfort of the bar overlooking the ocean. Try a local cocktail which the barman will shake up for you. Madagascar is famous for it's rum and you won't be disappointed.
Nosy Iranja offers a choice of activities such as: small outdoor gym, archery, badminton, volley ball, water-skiing, wake board, traditional canoeing, windsurfing, hobie cat and last but not least world class snorkelling and diving in a pristine environment.
Payable activities include: scuba-diving, fishing, excursions to Nosy Be and mainland Madagascar to experience local village and culture. Recently Nosy Iranja has added a small massage area where you can be pampered under the shade of the sika trees.
A big draw-card for this island is the turtle project. Nosy Iranja is the breeding ground for green and hawksbill turtles that come onto the beach to lay their eggs. A trained guide is on duty to watch over the turtles and monitor their reproduction cycle. The hawksbill turtle is an important aspect of Nosy Iranja’s eco-system. Emanuel is a scientist from Nosy Be working on the turtle-monitoring project, very proud of it and eager to show visitors the turtle project, the reptiles and amphibians on Nosy Iranja. An information centre is presently being built on Iranja – in the south of the island where most of the turtles lay their eggs. Eggs are laid at night, mainly from mid-October to mid-March. A turtle-monitoring project monitors the eggs so that someone is there when they hatch two months later.
The bird life is diverse and remarkable and the island is also home to huge Coconut crabs.
