Madagascar Fort Dauphin (Toalagnaro) Excursions

Andohahela Reserve
You will be collected by Air Fort services from Berenty Reserve and driven to Andohahela Reserve (approximately 1 hour's drive). Andohahela has several entrances and is vast reserve with three parks built into one (76 000 hectares). These are Malio which is a typical rainforest but at present is not accessible to the public as the road is impassable. The second is Mangatsiaka which is a spiny forest and the third is Tsimelahy which is a transitional forest. The last two are open to tourists. You will drive to Tsimelahy (transitional forest) about thirty minutes further south on the main road. This entrance is eight km from the main road and the road is rough. It will take an hour to drive eight kilometres to get to the entrance of the park but you will be rewarded with the most incredible scenery. Tsimelahy is situated between two mountain ranges, the spiny forest in the north and the rainforest to the south. Take a forty five minute scenic walk in the fairytale forest from the entrance of the park (700 metres from Tsimelahy village). There is a campsite on the shores of Lake Antarantsy which is perfect for swimming. The campsite has a toilet with running water, basin and separate washing area. There is an open fire place and well laid out shade area under which the tents are pitched. The setting is beautiful in the midst of the reserve with abundant bird life such as Yellow-billed Kites, Madagascar Paradise Flycatchers etc. There is also abundance of lizards, chameleons and in typical Malagasy style the weirdest flora!

Baie de Lokaro - full day excursion with picnic lunch
The isolated Bay of Lokaro is a beautiful spot about 20km north of Fort Dauphin. Visitors to this remote tropical paradise cannot fail to be struck by the stunning scenery of the region: pristine littoral and tropical forests, rushing streams, meandering rivers and palm-fringed lakes. All these stretch from the mountains on the horizon down to the long stretches of fine white sand. Exposed rocky islets protect the bay's turquoise waters from the wild ocean beyond and help explain why Lokaro boasts the only substantial coral habitat in the southeast of Madagascar. The coral can be found in an idyllic lagoon sheltered by one of the bay's islands. This offers great snorkelling opportunities and can be reached from Lokaro's main beach.

Nahampoana Reserve - full day excursion with lunch
Nahampoana Natural Reserve is situated 7 km to the north of Fort Dauphin (about 15 minutes by road). This 67 ha park has four species of habituated lemurs, Ring-tailed, Red-fronted Brown and Bamboo lemurs as well as the dancing lemur, Verreaux's Sifaka; Radiated Tortoise (Geochelone radiata); chameleons and some birds. This reserve is a botanical garden where you will also see some of the natural vegetation of the dry south-west and the Intermediate Zone. Examples of these include the Octopus tree (Didierea madagascariensis), species of Euphorbia, the Madagascar Triangulate Palm (Neodypsis decaryii), the Travellers Palm (Ravinalia madagascariensis) and species of Pachypodium. In the forest there are waterfalls and natural swimming pools offering quiet and secluded picnic sites. One can also do a short excursion by pirogue through the mangroves.
