Madagascar: Gite de Berenty **
Thirteen very basic bungalows situated in a half circle near a breakfast/tea room area. Each bungalow has a ceiling fan, erratic shower (problem with water pressure and hot water) with toilet. There is a small veranda with a deck chair which is perfect for observing the very gregarious lemurs (deck chair is not always there). Please remember to take a strong torch and extra batteries as the electricity at the lodge is turned off at 22h00! (no more fan). Situated slightly closer to the restaurant are sixteen basic rooms called 'lodge' bungalows'. There are two rooms in each building and some family rooms with extra bunk beds and verandas. A must to see whilst in Berenty is the interesting museum at the entrance of the reserve offering a detailed history of the South, the various tribes, tribal dress and fauna/flora. The actual reserve has well laid out paths and this makes for easy viewing of the various wildlife. Berenty is surrounded by huge sisal plantations which offer a complete contrast to the Andohahela spiny forest that you drive through to get to Berenty.
The best time to view the lemurs is early morning and late afternoon when they are all dancing and tumbling around. Lemurs to see are Verreaux's Sifaka, Ring-tailed and Red-fronted Brown lemur. They are quitesemi-habituated and offer great photo opportunities whilst they clamber over and around the bungalows, hanging off the fruit trees and just being very comical.
