Madagascar: Kirindy Forest and Camp

Kirindy (Swiss) Forest is dry deciduous forest with an abundance of wildlife. Accommodation facilities are basic but is well worth roughing it and spending an overnight here. The optimum time here is in the early morning and late afternoon and night. Nocturnal lemurs here include Red-tailed Sportive Lemur, Pale Fork-marked Lemur, Greater Dwarf Lemur, Fat-tailed Dwarf Lemur and Grey Mouse Lemur. Diurnal lemurs include Verreaux's Sifaka and Brown Lemur. But Kirindy is best know for Madagascar's carnivore, the cat-dog-like Fosa. Best times to see this beast is October and November during the mating season.

Accommodation here comprise wooden bungalows that are sparsely furnished - Bed and mosquito net but there are no fans or air-conditioning. There is only cold water here. Shower facilities are communal with a bucket of cold water; toilets are communal squat-type flushing.

There are also clearings in the forest for tents. We may at times use this option (we supply tents, bedrolls, etc) should we not be able to get confirmed accommodation as described above. The ablution facilities are cold bucket showers and flush toilets.

This is a research camp and accommodation is sometimes at a premium here and although we try to book the wooden rooms we cannot guarantee that you will be given them.

There is a restaurant in the complex - with table d'hote menu.
