Departing very early from the hotel for your visit to Piton de la Fournaise - the island's active volcano ensures you the chance to experience this magical place. The ascent to the Volcano should be tackled in the early hours in order to enjoy the scenery to the full and also avoid getting sun burnt. It is worthwhile taking the walk to the small crater 'Formica Leo' inside the volcano (1 hour walk). As you drive along you go past the flowered slopes of Tampon, the hills of Plaine des Cafres covered with brambles and arum lilies, the fields of Plaine des Palmiste and finally the desert landscape near the Volcano. At Pas de Bellecombe view the moon-like scenery on the slopes of the volcano.

After a traditional Creole lunch you get the chance to visit the Maison du Volcan (designed by Maurice and Katia Kraft) - a museum outlining the history of volcanoes. Drive back to your hotel via Saint Pierre with its temples, markets and beaches.
