Tanzania - Muller's and Grant's Lodges
Amongst the early settlers in the Usambaras was Grant, a retired forestry officer and provincial commissioner one of whose hobbies was carpentry. In 1935 he built his home, later called 'Grant's Lodge', located at 1700m amongst the rolling, forested hills above Lushoto - the main town of the region. The lodge is solidly built of brick and is renowned for its splendid and well-cared for woodwork and furniture.
In the 1970's Grant left Tanzania and eventually the lodge was taken over by the Muller family who gave it its present name. Around the lodge are pleasant gardens and lawns amonst shady trees. Numerous walks are available in the area (guided or unguided) offering excellent bird watching opportunities and of considerable botanical interest. The walks are well-documented and guide sheets are available at the lodge. The local guide and expert, Francis, is 70 years old and very hard to keep up with even on a long mountain walk.
The lodge is a romantic house built in the thirties, standing alone atop of a hill surrounded by beautiful gardens. The interior features splendid woodwork, and consists of 7 bedrooms, a dining room and a cosy living room with big fire place. Not all rooms are ensuite. The cuisine is excellent and the atmosphere tranquil and very relaxing. Evenings can be spent in the comfortable sitting room by a log fire. There is a small library and a collection of games.
Grant's Lodge isa spacious colonial-era home perched on a beautiful green hillside within a 20 minute drive from Lushoto in the West Usambaras. The lodge is a peaceful retreat, offering an ambiance unique to Tanzania. Grant's Lodge has spacious and comfortable facilities, and is a welcome diversion from both the urban life of Tanzania's larger cities as well as the country's famed game parks. Grant's Lodge is situated 1270 m (5,000 feet) above sea level, so expect warm days and cool nights year-round. The Lodge was built in the early 1950's, of brick and hardwood. The living room has a large fireplace, comfortable couches, and a TV and Video. With cool temperatures and lush vegetation, you'll spend your days out and about, getting to know the area as well as it's birds. There are 5 spacious bedrooms, but not all are 'en-suite'. While at Grant's Lodge, your meals are prepared for you, in the finest tradition of Tanzanian home cooking. It is ideally situated for access to the remaining indigenousforest patches of Magamba and Mazumbai for those with botanical and ornithological interests.
