Tanzania - Ndutu & Serengeti

Approaching fromthe highlands of Ngorongoroone descends onto the Serengeti plains, through the Malanja depression and onwards onto the plains. These plains, harbour many species of the dry savannahs such as larks, sandgrouse and wheatears. Grant's gazelles, Ostrich and Giraffe and at certain times of the year myriads of Wildebeest and Zebra dot the plains. Beyond this depression we proceed onto the short grass plains; Bustards and Crowned Lapwing are always visible. Our path continues into the Ndutu woodlands, a beautiful mature acacia woodland habitat with alkaline lakes and a system of swamps intermixed with the woodland stands. Ndutu Safari Lodge is situated in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in the southern sector of the Serengeti eco-system. The Lodge nestles unobtrusively under a canopy of giant acacias overlooking a soda lake, Lake Ndutu. The lodge offers a superb base in which to explore the range of habitats that lie within easy reach. The lodge's waterhole is a magnet for the area's birds including the ever-present Fischer's Lovebird, a variety of mannikins, waxbills, widowbirds and also the endemic Rufous tailed Weaver and Grey-breasted Spurfowl. The woodlands are good for Rufous Chatterer, Grey and Bearded Woodpeckers, Red-fronted Barbet and Red-fronted Tinkerbird, Red-throated Tits, Three-banded Courser, a variety of cuckoos and weavers and much more. The lakes near the lodge are often full of flamingoes while the swamps might have some interesting water birds during the dry season.

North of Ndutu the short grass plains of the Serengeti drift away from one into the haze in the distance. Further north the landscape changes to vast acacia-studded savannahs of rolling hills. The Serengeti is a natural paradise and home to one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth - the annual migration of millions of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle. We could encounter teems of wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, giraffe and their associated predators, the lions, leopards, hyenas and cheetahs. Among the many birds we expect to see are the six species of vultures that gather at the frequent kills over the plains, along with many other birds of prey are present as well. We will search for Jackson's Widowbird, Grey-capped Social Weaver, Blue-naped Mousebird, the giant Black-and-white Casqued Hornbill, Black-headed Gonolek, Silverbird, Abyssinian Scimitarbill, Usambiro Barbet, and hosts of bee-eaters, bush-shrikes, starlings, woodpeckers, turacos, bustards, kingfishers and rollers for whichthe area is justly famous.
